I move my throttle slightly up before starting my Kubota but do I need to tap the accelerator as it is cranking. Something tells me not to do that but it seems to help sometimes. Apparently the glow plug needs to be activated year around right?
Thanks,
jesse

Opening the throttle slightly before attempting to start is Kubota's recommendation (in fact, my manual say half way, which in my opinion is far too much). And NO, you do not need to tap any pedals or anything else while it's cranking. And YES, the glow plugs should be activated before attempting to start, year round if the engine is "cold", i.e., hasn't been run in the last half hour or so.

Glow plug. What part of Texas did you move to? /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Wen, does your tractor not have glow plugs? I know there are other "preheat" methods, and of course, some diesel engines now are instant start, but my manual (B2710) still refers to the "glow plug indicator", but of course, it only takes 2-3 seconds when the temperature is above freezing (and I intend to try to make that the only time I use the tractor)./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My tractor has a glow plug, but it says that zero seconds are required above 50 degrees and it hasn't got colder than that in the last two years in Ft. Worth, Texas! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Well, I'm about 70 miles south (and a tiny bit east) of Ft. Worth, but the B2710 manual says 2 to 3 seconds over 32 degrees F, 5 seconds from 23 to 32 degrees, and 10 seconds from 5 to 23 degrees. Since 35 degrees is the coldest weather I've used the tractor in so far, 2 to 3 seconds works fine, but I just had to experiment a long time ago, and sure enough it does not want to start promptly if you don't give it that couple of seconds./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Hi Jesse.
I also move my throttle slightly up which is about 1/4 of the way,and not like the manual says 1/2 way.
From a cold start and knowing the oil has drain from the engine head I feel 1/4 throttle much better and the engine life will last longer......but I been wrong many times in my life.

Glow plugs.
When the temp is 32 degress or more about 20 seconds of preheating time seem to be enough.
Around 10 to 25 degress about 60 seconds, but when the temps are lower than 10 degrees I plug my heater in.

If I shut the tractor off no matter what the temp maybe, with in about 30 mins I need to use the glow plug to restart.

Oh by the way I live in new Hampshire and thats why I plug the heater during cold temps, and I believe it also help to save the engine and transmission life.

I would be very careful tapping the accelertor because of the fuel injection.

Have fun and stay safe.

I'm wondering what damage would be done by tapping the pedal before you turn the key to the start position?

I tap mine every time before the key is turned--I do this on both my diesel tractors.

I don't move my throttle lever from the turtle position and I always use my glow plug if the engine has been shut down for awhile.

Have I been starting my tractors wrong all these years?
They are still in one piece. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: Starting Kubota...Gordon

By the sounds you feel comfortable and having good luck starting your tractors that way....heck why stop.

Have fun and stay safe.

It can be 90 in the shade and I have to use the glow plugs for about 5 seconds to get my B-2150 to start first crank, and no I have never bumped the throttle up any before starting. If it is cold I'll raise the rpm some after it has started to let it warm up quicker. I like to let some oil pressure build before cranking up the throttle to warm her up. Its worked for 2048 hours.
