Recently I purchased a 1980's? Mitsubishi mt372 2 cylinder, 15 hp diesel compact tractor. The only way we could get it to start was by jumping it with another vehicle and spraying WD40 in the intake. The previous owner assured me that it was the starter. So I took it home and put a new starter and battery on it. Still having the same issue. But now, after it runs for a while, and I shut it off, it will start back up. But if I let it sit for a few hours, it needs WD40 again. Something else that's strange is when I leave the key in the "on" position after it starts, It kind of sputters for a while. But if I turn the key to the off position, It revs right away without the sputtering. Also, with the key on. It will only rev to 2500 RPM. With the key Off, it will rev to 3000 RPMs. Glow plugs seem to be working. Any ideas?
