every once in awhile when i hit the key on my B2400 i just get a clicking sound, hit the key again and it starts right up, today i had to do it about 4 times before it started, what do u think? dirty connections at battery, bad connection at starter or bad ground?

I used to get the clicking sound when my battery was just about dead -- but seeing that you finally get it to turn over, I think you may be on the right track. Clean off the terminals and connectors and see if you have better luck. If that doesn't work, you may need to keep moving towards the start connections.

Dave; SUPPOSED TO RAIN TOMORROW SO I MIGHT GET A CHANCE TO CLEAN THE TERMINALS AND CONNECTIONS( depending on what the better 7/8 has for me to do. i think the battery is fine, although it is old when it does turn over it really cranks fine.

The clicking sound is usually an indication of a poor connection. It might be the key switch, the starter solenoid, or the wiring. It can also be a combination of many things causing high resistance in the wiring. Clean the terminals on the battery and if that resolves the problem you are set. If the problem persists, then continue down stream cleaning and checking for tightness all the connections. If the problem persists after you have checked all the wiring, then I would suspect either the solenoid or the ignition switch. To check the ignition switch, when you get the click, hold the key to the start position and then try to wiggle the key to see if that gets the starter going. If it does, then it is the switch. If not, then I would check the solenoid, starter brushes, or starter armature end bushings for wear.

Junkman: cleaned the battery posts and the cables today started the tractor 7 or 8 times during the day and nary a click, just cranked right over every time. did not do any of the other wiring checks as i want to know if that was the problem. they really were, not that diirty. if the problem persist then i will check the other connections.
