Starting problems

I have a 25 hp 50" deck mower. Replaced battery and ignition switch thinking these were the issue. Both parts were 5 years old - original.

Problem: when I attempt to start mower it will not turn over 85% of the time. It just clunks - top of engine moves (air intake) rotates about 1/2". The celenoid (SP?) does not click and when it does start it fires up no problem and runs smooth - no smoking etc.

Mower has regular oil/filter changes every 50 hours (265 hours on meter) and I replaced air filter this spring.

Should I replace or clean contacts to celenoid and or starter?

Sure would help for us to have a make and model number to see if that particular model has a problem. You haven't even identified the engine manufacturer. Just not enough info to make a guess.

With so little information, the only thing that pops into mind is a sticky solenoid. Remove it and clean and lube it. May do wonders, may not.

Clean the ground and make sure cables are in good shape. Can you jump from the battery directly to the starter and make it spin over that way?

If you can still hear the starter "whrrrrrr" after the motor stops turning it would be that the bendix on the starter needs repaired or replaced ...they are all plastic(nylon) these days ... If you get nothing when you turn the key ,check your cables an ignition switch connections.. I suppose you could also have a bad spot on the starter rotor...?

Is it a Hustler mower? I have one that has a similar problem. When I get around to it, I intend to check voltage at battery, switch, and solenoid, and ground continuity throughout.
