Today my parent's had carpet laid in their house over hardwood and now the front door won't open. They asked me if it is possible to cut the door down and I really don't know so Is it possible and what is the best method? Thank's

You really don't want to cut down a front door. It needs to seal at the bottom and if you cut it, there's no way to keep the seal.

Normally you put an entry of some kind at the front door. Tile is pretty common, but wood or linolium work too.

Take the door off and remove the sweep. Some brands have the actual bottom of the door recessed a bit, which would allow the bottom flange to be cut, then re-install the sweep.
A new door could be ordered cut down from the millwork distributor, it would have to be shimmed at the sill to allow clearance for the new floor and to have the head trim line up with the old. I think it was about $100 list for the cut-down. I'd check with a lumberyard rather than a box store if you opt for the latter.

In a past life I was a trim carpenter and we had to deal with this issue many times. If it is a prehung steel door we would carefully take the door and jamb out as one unit. Then use a piece of 1 x 6 or similar material as a spacer under the threshold and re-install the unit. This would move the whole door up about 3/4"

This is also a common fix. Especially if there is a hardwood floor underneath the new carpet. Cut out a 3'x3' square in front of the door and use some type of carpet edging to dress the edge of the carpet and your problem is solved.

Yes it can be cut. I used a circular saw with a metal cut off blade on it to cut a commercial steel door I installed in the basement. Once it's cut remove an inch of insulation, glue a piece of wood in the hollow area and screw a new sweep to the wood.

You might condiser a Rising Hinge . These will lift the door up 1/2" as it opens - allowing it to clear the carpet. Don't know - might work for you.

My parents did the same thing many years ago and by their front door, the carpet installers made a cut in the carpet like the swing of the door and left the hardwood floor there.
On a side note, they are getting ready to tear the carpet back up and refinish the hardwood floors.

been there several times: the last time was in my parents house: 2 years ago: to my dismay, the first time they had carpet installed, it was completely glued down: it took a lot of work to get that all removed, but the floors looked a lot better than any carpet when we finished: and i didn't do a very good job of refinishing: i just perfer the look and cleanliness of hardwood.
