I am trying to take some of the slop out of my steering (YM2620D). I have found the adjustment screw and lock nut on the right side of the steering box. I have been unable to loosen the lock nut. I have sprayed PB Blaster on the nut and adjusting screw. After several day of soaking, the nut will not move.

Questions: Is the nut a normal right hand thread? Loosen counter clockwise? Should I put a impact wrench on the nut to try and loosen? Note- Kenmac has indicated to me that the nut is a normal right handed thread.

When turning in the adjustment screw inwards, how far do you go? Do you adjust inwards till it hits and then back off a little? Do you adjust a little and then check the steering wheel for slop? I understand from searches that there should be about 2" of play in the linkage.

I do not want to destroy anything. Thanks for your imput and support guys.

Dick, I just adjusted mine enough to take up the slack. Does the nut appear rusted ?? I would hate to see you break it but, you just may have to put some muscle on it to get it to turn. It probably hasn't been loose since it was put together

There is no rust on the nut or adjustment screw. The area seems clean. I will try the impact wrench and let you know what happens.

My neighbor came over with a 3 foot X 1/2" socket drive. The extra leverage loosened the lock nut. We were able to adjust the slop out of the steering. Note- on an old post, someone suggested raising the front wheels off the ground while making the adjustment. We did that and were able to eliminate most all of the drag from over tighting the adjustment screw.

Thanks to the folks who responded on line or PM'ed me with input on the matter.

Now on to the leaking knuckle seal and rear drive shaft leaking seal on the front axle.

Many times when there is a lot of slop in the steering box , it is because one of the bearings is bad. If this is the reason for the slop, eventually the tubes on the ball/nut assembly will get damaged.
