Tractor
Case 585
Very recently, I started to hear a "whine" while turning the steering wheel on my Case 585 tractor, then the brakes got really soft. I went out this morning to finish up some mowing and the whine was much worse and the power steering isnt powered any more and is really hard to turn. Im pretty new to tractors and Im not even sure what to look for to be honest...

1) Are these related issues or totally seperate; brakes and steering?
2) Is there a filter somewhere Im missing that might be stopped up?
3) Does the steering work off a seperate pump and is there a fluid reservoir I can check to see if it's out of fluid? I dont see a place to put in steering fluid or hydrolic fluid.

Thanks in advance,

:welcome:

Is the tractor new to you? Do you have a manual?

Brakes and steering works off same system. Check the hydraulic oil at the stick on the side of the transmission behind your left heel. Run the tractor at 1600 RPM for 3 minutes, stop and check the oil. Per the operator's manual.

Most of the hydraulic problems on that style system are because of the hydraulic filter on the multi-purpose valve under the left foot board.

I looked up your tractor on the Case parts site. It appears there is only one hydraulic pump. There is a canister type hydraulic filter listed but I can't tell you where it is. It also shows a hydraulic dipstick that I'm guessing is on the right rear of the tractor but I could be wrong. It shows a brake fluid reservoir also and again I can't tell you where it is. (see a pattern here?) I'm guessing you are either low on hydraulic fluid (find that dipstick!) or have a valve sticking somewhere. I would guess you have hydraulic assist on both the steering and brakes. I suppose the soft brake pedals might indicate that brake reservoir is low. You desperately need to get an owners manual from your Case dealer, Ebay, or somewhere. I wouldn't run the tractor until you find out if the hydraulic system is full of oil. You don't want to ruin a very expensive pump.
Hopefully someone here is familiar with your tractor and can be of more help.

beenthere...
Yes, the tractor is fairly new to me and no, I dont have a manual.

geneP...
I figured they were related, but I wasnt for sure. I'll go out and run it and check the stick. I did this morning and it looked fine, but just to make sure, I'll go try it again. I wasnt sure if the transmission/hydraulics were on the same system or not. Im thinking filter problems. I'll run to the Case house and pick one up tomorrow.

I'll pick a manual also...lol. I have found 2 dipsticks, right side of the engine (oil of course) and left floor board (transmission and/or hydraulics), like geneP said. Both are full and the fluid looks in good condition.

I guess I'll pull the floorboard up and see if I can find that filter and replace it. Maybe thats the issue.

Thanks for your help and I'll let you know what the deal was,
