We have a Jinma 254 series, I think. The tractor began to not respond to the steering wheel occasionally. A few weeks ago it failed to respond at all. We have taken the steering column apart and found the bearings were shot. And completely removed from the bearings casing.
Has anyone had this problem. How did you remove the casing from the two parts of the column?
Thank you!

Well, the usual reason for the symptoms you describe is hydraulic cylinder bypass. That's a heckuva long way from where you're working right now. I suspect that the bearing problem may simply have been caused by your looking for the problem in the wrong place.

I suggest the most common reason for the bearings failing is using the wheel as a grab handle, to mount a machine, or vehicle.

As stated above, that should not cause the steering box to stop responding to inputs.

We may have a problem in another area, but the steering column was raising up out of its slot. So once we get this repaired we may still need more work. Thanks for the advice. Right now we can't get the remains of the bearings casings out of the column enclosure or the steering wheel shaft.

Thanks for your responses.

We think the bearings were damaged from pulling up onto the tractor with the steering wheel.

So far we haven't been able to find a bearings puller that is made for the bearings not still being in tact. I will look at Harbor Freight. Thanks.

Have you tried knocking the steering shaft out from the top towards the bottom ? If the steering wheel is off take a block of wood and knock the shaft down out the bottom, the bearing should come out with the shaft, thats what holds the shaft in the tube,it should all come out the bottom of the steering column tube

We have repaired the steering column bearings. It was an ordeal removing the old bearings casing.

Now the steering is still not responding as we would like. I think we do have the power steering problem that someone mentioned earlier. My question is now how do I diagnose and repair that?
This list has been a major help. Thanks in advance for any assistance with this newest problem.
Thank you,

Well, the technically correct method would be with a pressure tester. But the collective wisdom here knows that the Chinese steering cylinders are prone to bypass. If you have a pressure tester, great. Put it in series with each input to the cylinder, turn the steering wheel both ways. The pressure between the two lines will be inconsistent. If you don't have one, the cylinder repair kits are cheap - and the job doesn't require any specialty tools or advanced mechanical skills.
