steering wheel spinner knobs

Ok you convinced me, I was at TSC today and picked up one. They have really improved from the ones I remember from the 80s...

I got a black one for $10. I got it installed but have not tried it yet.

I'm lost without the spinner. Left hand on spinner, right on FEL control, peace. No knob, no peace. I don't know how anyone does anything on a tractor without a spinner if the tractor has power steering. --HC

I had one on the 2090 Case I used to have. It had a high reverse speed so I used to idle backwards alot. At an idle, the hydraulic steering had low pressure and would be difficult to steer, especially if I was making some kind of manuever with a piece of equipment on the drawbar. That Case did not have a foot throttle, only the hand one. At pto rpm's, the steering was very light, still, I found it very easy to steer with my hand on the knob and the other on the throttle to keep the rpm's constant over changing terrain.

You can buy knobs that fold over flat to the inside of the wheel so that they do not stick up. Now, in a flat position, you would have to resort to an old truck driving trick. That is, do not wrap your thumb(s) around the wheel.

Back when many trucks had no power steering or "heavy" power steering, you had to be very careful when on other than hard ground. Hitting a rut could suddenly whip that wheel around and literally break your thumb(s).

My father has a Hough 65 Payloader with a spinner knob cast into the steering wheel. Its a little worn out at this point, but with twin sticks for the boom and bucket on the right, and the shuttle and gear shift on the left, that knob is needed when operating.

i heard that. I have a few twin stick machines that also have twin stick hyds. without a spinner it would be a bear to operate.

If you have hydrostatic steering, then in most cases the knob will not stay in any one spot...I believe this was adressed earlier in this thread also.

9 on my manual steering box jobs since I use my left to steer, and right for hyds and gearshifters.. orbital boxes don't matter as you can recenter it wherever you want it..

I have spinner knobs on both my classic cars and they are at 2 O'clock. Haven't had a need to put one on the tractor.

I had a spinner knob on my 8N. After a couple of good ruts and my shoulder getting jammed I took it off. It was a few years later I developed bursitis in that shoulder. Never again.
