Hi,

Used my woods 74 inch snow blower for the first time. The snow was wet and heavy, 14inch thick, and I found it to stick very bad. Gave up and used the FEL. The blower was used, not sure how old, maybe 10years but in good condition.

Hoping it will work better in some "normal snow"

Any thoughts?

yup- if it 10 yrs old, I am suspecting the chute is riddled with rust and worn paint. If I were you, I'd get the blower in a warm place, melt the snow and clean the rust off. paint the whole insides with metal paint like rust o luem. this should make it much hard for snow to stick with a shiny coat of paint.

Yup,

Order one of Clarences impeller kits to speed up your snow removal as the impeller kit sweeps all the ice and snow out of the impeller housing at each revolution and reduces slush to a bare minimum as it cleans the impeller drum. Clarences impeller kit is $30.00 USD and he has sold them for many years and he offes a money back guarantee if you are not happy as well.

Send your mascot pooch over to the local deere dealer to buy a gallon of
fluid-film to coat the interior of the snow caster and you will notice a world of difference as well.

EDIT: Yup I forgot to mention cooking spray, but with a blower he may be better off lining it with some slick sheet material if he cannot obtain Fluid Film.

Make sure shear pins are not broken and keep up rpm's @ 540 and what radioman said about paint, maybe add some pam to the fan and chute.

I agree with cleaning up the chute and I also spray my chute with a low temp silicone spray. I buy it at the ACE hardware store but cannot remember the brand name. The last snow was really very heavy wet snow so don't give up on your woods snowblower to soon.

I also had a difficult time with clearing this storms wet snow. It was the first time I used my 54" JD front mount blower on my JD1023E. I was excited about trying out my new rig and quickly found the 12"+ snow would build up in the chute throat and come out in large chunks. I did eventually clear the snow but it took some time. I will try some silicone spray the next time however this snow was difficult blowing even with my walk behind Ariens. Also what is the "Clarences Impellar Kit" and where can I get more info on it? Thanks.

When you stop the tractors motion, try to remember to keep snowblower running for a few seconds to clear the chute of snow before you shut it off.

You're running your machine too slow. Once the snow gets flying, it will run OK. I had to chew through over 2 feet of cement up in NH this weekend (pics below). Don't feel bad - I did the same thing that you did - it took me a half hour just to get out of my barn - didn't even get 2 feet and the blower was packed up solid. Twice. I did the same thing first try last year too, which was the first time I used the blower. I quickly learned that I was being too tender with the throttle. You need to tach it up to full blast - beyond PTO speed if the throttle will let you - then ease into the snow. Once the snow starts flying out of the chute, it isn't hard to keep it moving. Keep the tractor pinned to the boards and go for it - do NOT try to drop the RPMs while you are moving. If you want to cut the throttle to change direction or whatever, give your blower a few seconds to clear itself or it will pack up and turn into a 600 pound brick. I broke 3 shear pins so far - all of them because I chopped the throttle without letting the blower clear itself.

You can spray down the chute, but it is really a waste of time. Whatever you put on there will be gone in a few minutes. It might help you get started though - soak everything down with WD40 - good as anything else. Don't worry about any chute or impeller rust. It will go away soon enough - snow is pretty abrasive.

Don't give up - blowers are awesome and you are going to be ecstatic with yours once you get the hang of it. I'm convinced that mine could eat a car. Besides, clearing snow with an FEL has to be the worst way there is to do it. I'd almost rather do it by hand - I think it'd be faster.

thanks

Had it at the 540 pto line and it was not to the boards.

Been looking forward to using it and this wet snow was a disappointment.

On a different note, that snow also gave me 5 days of no power and internet.

It the inside of your chute is rusted and pitted, i would consider lining it with some HDPE sheeting. (High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Sheeting | U.S. Plastic Corp.) I use this material for woodworking jigs, drawer runners, etc and it is very slick as well as flexible (in thinner materials) and durable. You can not glue it but if you chute is already rusted i would line the chute with a sheet of it and rivet it in place. I would think this would be easier than trying to sand and paint, which will have limited longevity.
