stihl 038 cracked fuel tank

many years ago the chain broke on my 038 and cracked the fuel tank. i jb welded it and its been fine ever since until now. it leaks now. this is after at least 15 years from when the tank first cracked. anyway, after pricing a new one ($150) i was thinking how nice it would be if i could add some jb. would this possibly work or is laying another coat on going to be waste of time?

For safety reasons, a new tank would be best.
A buzzing chainsaw bursting into flames would be no fun at all.

If you want to try patching again.
That's a plastic tank isn't it?
Sounds like what you did the first time has held pretty well. Maybe do that again. Not sure what the patch job looks like from before, but if you know exactly where it's leaking, you may be able to grind on it a little, and add more jb.
If all else fails, you might try a product called "Seals All" in a red and yellow tube. It's sometimes hard to find....one of the auto parts carry it around here, that I know of.
I used it to glue the fuel inlet nipple back on a carburetor years ago and it never came loose. Gas doesn't effect it.

Sell the saw on Fleabay and go buy a new one. Help the economy and get something new....and better.

I have used JB and SealAll to fix tanks. :thumbsup: No problems.

I would proably grind the old JB off first depending on how hard of a spot it is to get to.

i ground off the old jb and found that the tank is more than just cracked. there are a couple of larger size holes in it. it may be new saw time.

JB then push fiberglass reinforcement in the wet JB and then JB over the fiber again. Worth a try.

thats a good idea with the fiberglass. i will try it. not sure that i would pay $150 for the replacement tank but it would work.

I've got a broken / chipped tank right at the filler cap neck. $150? Mines on a pole saw but that's ridiculous.

Some questions. Is your saw a 038 038 super or 038 magnum? Metal or plastic tank?

I'm working with a guy on my repair site that knows the 038 saws like the back of his hand.
I also started a thread to help get info for you there to pass on.
