Stihl Intellicarb

I am looking into buying a Stihl FS 130 or a 250. Besides the size, I notice that the 250 has an "Intellicarb" on it, and the 130 does not. What exactly is the difference in this carb? Are they as reliable?

I know it is suppose to adjust the afr depending upon air filter cleanliness, but I take care of everything I own so I don't see a need for this.

The intellicarb is nothing to fear and has no more internal parts than a non-compensating carb. It just takes the atmospheric side of the metering diaphragm and hooks it to the clean side of the air filter. If anything, I see less problems on the compensated chainsaws because the atmospheric side of the carb can not get dirt in it.

The bigger question for you might be if you want the 4-MIX engine or the traditional 2-cycle engine!

The four mix engines have lot's of torque over a standard two stroke.

Thats true the torque is higher, but its the RPM's that you want with a chain saw.....

Do the 4-Strokes run at 11,000+ RPM's like the 2-Strokes???

They run about 900 to 1500 rpm lower but with the higher torque you can offset that with normal work. They just stay at a higher rpm easier under load!

The 4-MIX is not used for chainsaws, only trimmers, etc. The only exception to this is the pole trimmers that use the 4-MIX engines.

I use a combi tool that is a 4-MIX with a pole pruner and the 4-MIX works very well for this application.

The 4-MIX also uses less fuel.

Both products are very good and both run the same 50:1 oil mix. Other than checking the valve adjustment on the 4-MIX, there is no more maint needed than on a 2 stroke. Also, because it has no crankcase oil, it can be run in any position which is not true with the 4 cycle products with a crankcase holding oil.
