I purchased this saw a couple years ago, minimum use, runs great.Recently purchased a Oregon chain for it.Right size ect. When I installed the chain, saw wouldn't turn(overcome the clutch).way too tight...not the bar ajustment had it real loose..still couldn't turn.Acts like the bar guide.Reinstalled the old chain and that worked fine.
This is a Oregon S50,right one according to the chart. Our local Stilh dealer closed.

Did the new chain fit the bar ok, reason I'm asking is I have the same saw and had the same problem a couple of months back except with stihl chains. It seems that sthil makes two different chains with the same part number except one of the numbers has a "m" at end of the part number. The difference in the width of the inside of chains where it rides in the bar was so small you couldn't tell just by looking at it. My dealer gave me the chains with the "m" in the part number and they worked just fine. I also have Oregon brand chains for the saw also but they are so used that I can't read anythig on them anywhere.

i agree it is not the saw but the chain. I have a husky rancher 55 and 2 differant bars to accomidate differant chains

I've got one of the stihl 180 models. My chain drive teeth are 43 mils thick. That seems to be rare. 50 mil chains seem a lot more common. Might be worth looking at. This is the m and r difference cfender described above. It is frustrating, because I can't ever seem to find the one I need. I'm tempted to look for the other bar just to make finding new chains easier.

I had the same problem as has been described above. The gauge of the links comes in two thicknesses. You got the wrong (thicker) one.

I gave my Stihl dealer the old chain and he still gave me the wrong gauge.

Yep I bet you tried to put .050 chain on a .043 bar.
