Any thoughts on a 1700 with a blown head gasket. Talked seller down to $950 on the phone. Just found it tonight on NC craigslist and it has several pics. Owner bought from a friend in need of money type story. 487 hrs, missing side panels, but current owner said it would run poorly. PTO spins, all gears work.

Many times a blown head gasket is tied in with a cracked head.

actually from what I have read the ym 1700 have a common problem with running hot and blowing the head gasket, it would be a 50% chance that the gasket would be all it needs, depending on how hot it got? and how smart someone was when they noticed it over heating and shut it down,
I would find out if the previous owner was the one it run hot with? or if he purchased it this way with plans on repairing it and perhaps found more then he wanted wrong with it.
I still have fresh in my mind that a few months ago a Ym1700 went up for sale on the CL with the same "blown head gasket " problem, and was being sold as a parts tractor, I actually inquired about a part to buy from this 1700, but the complete tractor had already been sold,
Not saying this is the tractor your talking about, but I would try to find out?
a tractor with only a blown head gasket is no big deal to change but if more has been damaged do to being run hot? like crack head/ block, then it is in fact nothing more then a parts tractor,

Pics are on craigslist today with about the same amount of snow I have on the ground so I assumed :)rolleyes:) they were posted recently. Tractor is together in pics. Owner bought from a friend in need of money and says he only had the intention of reselling it. Oil is milky and runs poorly???? He was told it was the head gasket - ??? - by his friend who ran it hot due to a leaking radiator. Radiator was replaced but damage was already done. Another gamble I guess. Owner has not tried to fix. Stated nothing obviously wrong like giant hole in the block. Would it run poorly with just a blown head gasket? Guess it depends on how blown. Are heads etc available at a decent price?

Yes they are available, about $600 for a new one. Have to return your core, good or bad.

Ron, I inquired out of curiosity and I can tell you he will do better then $950, but my next investment is a FEL. I doubt the only issue is the head gasket, probably needs some head work, could be worth it as long as nothing else is bad, new head can be had for $700 or less I suppose. Doesn't seem to be a recon job, picture shows 400+ hours, if I didn't have a tractor I might would go $800 on it if I could inspect and check a few things out.

900 is my lowest. Thanks HB"

I didn't even make an offer and he dropped to $900 with just a few questions.

Ron are you using searchtempest to search all the craigslist ads within a certain distance from you?

I ran my 1700 hot with the same problem. There was a lot of damage. Rings ans pistons were cooked. I ended up going through the engine. I replaced cylinder liners, pistons, rings, rod bearings, valves, stem seals, and springs. The parts alone were around $1,000. I did all of the work myself. Then I bought a water pump kit for about $250. It runs good now and does overheat even on 90+ days pulling a rotary cutter.

Used tractors for sale, used Yanmar tractors, reconditioned Yanmar tractor, Gray Market

It would not hurt to fill out their form and see what they have to offer, including shipping.
I wonder what they use to recondition engines and transmissions. From a link in the left column of that page:

ECO Ceramic-Metal Composite Renews Engines
Wholesale Distributor Of ECO Engine Friction Component Repair Formula...

ECO rebuilds engine friction components without disassembly to increase compression, horsepower

...it travels through engine oil and targets the high friction locations to implant ECO in only the needed locations and amounts in a self regulating manner

genuine astounding engine renewing discovery.
