Storing gas & diesel fuel?

We have a fairly large tank with a hand pump that we used a lot in the farming days, but it's just stored away now. Given recent prolonged power outages I was thinking it might be a good idea to fill it with diesel fuel or gasoline. Wondering what the recommendations are as to how long one can store gasoline or diesel? And are the stabilizer type additives I see advertised effective in extending storage periods?

Diesel can be stored for a loooong time. Try to minimize moisture, which can cause algae growth in a worst case. An additive can help in cold weather.

With storms the trick is to purchase just before an event and use it after if you didn't need it.
Also if you have some type of RV fill it. My last motor home had a 50 gal tank and my boat has a 30 gallon tank. I also have a 30 gal barrel and 4-5 gal cans.
I have gone 12 days after a near miss hurricane and my generator uses 1/2 gal an hour. That wasn't too bad when gas was under $2. a gal. but now I might have to cycle my power at current prices.

We have a 300 gal. overhead gas tank and 150 gal diesel tank.I use marine grade stabil for the gas tank and schaffers diesel treat 2000 for the diesel tank.I change filters once a year,never had any issues with this setup.coobie
