Hi Guys,
I don't know if any of you guys live in South West England or have heard about the storms we have had, but they have been pretty bad, will upload some pictures soon.
We have had a lot of trees down, quite big ones, (again will upload pictures soon) and i am wanting to chop them up for firewood but possibly some of it i want to chop up into planks. Does anyone know of the best chainsaw to use to log some approx. 20" trees. I currently have got a Stihl MS181 but i don't think that will be big enough as i think it has only got a 16" bar. I am also looking at getting a woodmizer or similar so any recommendations for one of those or something that i could use to chop up into planks.
Also anyone feel free to post pictures of any bad storm damage in England to show the extent of what we had. I will be uploading a video shortly of some of the most major damage and some of the trees we have had down
Cheers,
Ben

I have read and seen photos on another website about the storms that hit SW England. Pretty bad stuff and some huge waves hitting the shorelines.

With a 16 inch bar you can cut up the trees. You just have to cut from both sides of the tree. You can check the manual but I would think you could use a 20" bar and chain as well. I have a Stihl 046 with a 20" bar and chain and I sometimes have to cut from the other side of the trunk. I top off the tree first and then start cutting the trunk into logs or into firewood rounds.

I just tried to describe how I cut larger trunks but I can't get across how I do it. There should be references on the Internet.

If you do not have chainsaw chaps and helmet, then get them and use them.

Later,
Dan

Looks like Mother Nature plans on keeping you busy for a while. That's a lot of clean-up.

Yep, been sawing up some of the smaller stuff for days now, even during the storms!!

If you want to mill lumber, I'd say the saw should be 70cc or larger (I run a 77cc saw for that). Go with as short a bar as you can, but it generally will need to be 6" longer than the width of the logs you expect to mill, as the milling jig takes up some length. Granberg makes a good milling jig for chainsaws.

PROFarms, are you planning to purchase a Woodmizer mill just to clean up the downed trees, or is that part of the master plan? A Woodmizer is a pricey toy. Nice mill, but kinda pricey.

We've had a mill for 10 years, not a Woodmizer, but ours has served us well and is easily repaired.

I have a couple of Sthil 019 saws with 16 inch bars. I cut 24 inch trees all the time with them. Keep the chain sharp!!! I like them as they are light and I can still use them with the bad back. Just have to come in from both sides to make your cut. Gives you more time to think about where you are falling that tree.
