Some guys I know are advising me to add a bottle of blue STP on my next oil change. IS this OK for a diesel tractor. Should I also put this in my truck?
Also any general advise on additives to fuel and/or oil is appreciated.

Roque,

For what purpose do you want to add 'STP' to your oil?

I'm not a big fan of any oil additive... usually use quality oil to begin with and have a religious change schedule you stick by...

Most oil additives are "worthless" marketing hype... money would be better spent on a quality oil & more frequent oil changes...

I agree wholeheartedly with John.

Have you ever torn an engine down after adding STP or any other additive? If the engine, they're a mess on the inside. Especially if the engine is run very hot.

I have a 91 Topaz with over 180K miles on it and doesn't use a drop of oil. I religiously change the oil every 3k miles. Now, about the rest of the car..... mileage has taken its toll. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Nearly everybody considers oil additives to be exactly what they are--at best, a waste of money; at worst, a detriment to lubrication. General consensus is that lube oil manufacturers know what they're doing and the snake oil salemen have been flushed out.

But switch the topic to fuel additives, and suddenly it seems that a good many people believe that the same companies that make lube oil don't know how to make fuel oil. Snake oil salesman abound, probably the same ones that used to sell Slick50 and STP.

Had a car that the previous owner ALWAYS used STP Oil additive at every 3000 mile oil change. That stuff coats internal parts and turns to a thick goo, then hardens forming a shield around all the seals causing them to dry out. I had to replace the timing chain and I couldn't believe the crud on the inside of the engine. Really a mess.

Now I have used a 25% part mix of STP and motor oil for rebuilds. When reassembling the engine, coat the bearing surfaces and cylinder walls as well as the pistons, pins etc. Its thick properties help it stay in place until the oil pump is doing its thing, but the amounts I'm talking about are very small. I would NEVER add that or any other stuff to engine oil.

I like simplicity, so let me sum up the thoughts and see who agrees:
Add nothing to my fuel or oil.
1. If that is the case, does that apply to anti-gelling additives too?
2. what are quality oils and fuels (brands)

rogue,

I think that everyone will suggest that you add a fuel stabilizer or other preventative additives if you are purchasing larger amounts of diesel fuel. Those reasons are obvious.

Other than that, why add anything else.

Rogue, when you talk about fuel and oil, you're talking about two different things, even though they may have started from the same source. You want to burn the fuel, and you definitely don't want to burn the oil; one's for burning and the other for lubricating. I do add Power Service to my diesel fuel; don't know that I really need it, but know it cannot do any harm and it's supposed to help keep injectors clean, dissipate any moisture, prevent gelling (which ain't likely to happen where I live), but I don't use any oil additives and would never buy a used engine of any kind if I knew the previous owner had ever added anything like STP to it.

For the most part, I agree with the oil additive thread here. Don't use it! Although, I DID use STP one time, to keep some external oil pump gears in place while I got the cap back on the pump. Of course, I had to 'chill' the STP overnight to get it thicker so that it would do the trick! Love the AMC external oil pumps on the old 390 c.i. v8's....they were mounted upside down on the lower right of the timing chain cover housing...and a royal pain to install new gears and get the cover back on the housing.
