strange start problem

Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I did not mean to jump in on ERE's post but sounded like same issue.

I agree that the starter is probably the issue. I have not had time to do more than a visual inspection of starter. I should have caught that it had internal soleniod contacts with the soleniod pulling in the starter drive . Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to check it out. Again thanks all.

If one of the internal contacts looks burnt it'll probably be the + side. if you can't locate replacement contacts, try cleaning them up and swapping them.

Problem solved. It was two things. First was the battery which had good voltage but couldn't carry the load. The second, which masked the first when I jumpered to my truck battery was the ignition switch. I took it apart and cleaned up the copper disk and contacts (beware of the three springs and two ball bearings if you do this - it isn't difficult and only goes together one way but took me 1/2 hour to find one of the springs which leaped into the tool box on the bench where I was working). After doing the switch, I could reliably start using a jumper. The 2 month battery goes back to costco today.

Thanks for all of the good suggestions!

Now on to a much more serious problem - in a new post.

I was just typing a response to check the battery.... its usually the battery. Buy i see yo found out the issue.

Just cause a battery shows 12v doesn't mean its good. Check it under load (trying to start). most of the time when there bad you'll see 7-9 volts register on meter.... and solenoid clicks away like crazy.

I think I solved my starting issue finally on my 07 DK45. I figured it was solenoid contacts in starter as start switch was fuctioning correctly. So as part of what I call my 5 year maintenance I have been pulling apart, cleaning, adding dielectric compound, and reassembling every electical plug. Got to the start switch plug today and guess what, start issue has gone away. Still plan on getting to starter contacts in near future. Thanks all for your input.
