Thanks for all the info and suggestions. I did not mean to jump in on ERE's post but sounded like same issue.
I agree that the starter is probably the issue. I have not had time to do more than a visual inspection of starter. I should have caught that it had internal soleniod contacts with the soleniod pulling in the starter drive . Hopefully this weekend I'll have some time to check it out. Again thanks all.
If one of the internal contacts looks burnt it'll probably be the + side. if you can't locate replacement contacts, try cleaning them up and swapping them.
