Straw & Hay coverage

First off your going to use straw not hay. Second, sorry but it depends on the method of application. You can chaff it, (shred) or hand sown. Also depending on your application method, would be thickness.

I have gotten by with as little as 10 bales per acre. Spot sown.

HOW MANY BALES

How Many Square Bales of hay or straw does it take to cover an acre of sown grass seed?

Varies with size of bales, and method of spreading. When we were doing waterways on the old farm, I averaged around 18 or 20 bales per acre (hand spreading) UNTIL we rented a Finn straw blower. That applied straw a lot more evenly with less "clumping". That cut the average to around 14 bales per acre.

Your results may vary.

I have had good luck using the 60 bales per acre figure for shaken straw.

I dont know size of bales but 30 will fill a regular size pickup bed 3 courses high with the tailgate up.

I shake till I look down and see about 1/3 to 1/2 straw and 2/3 to 1/2 dirt.
