Shucks, were it me I'd tap next size up and simply install the appropriate plug to match whatever tap I'd used.
You do however want to use straight threads and not pipe thread but then most drain plugs should be straight thread and use a crush type copper gasket.
Problem with pipe threads is that they always want to leak just a little.
Were it me I'd want whatever matches the taps that I have on hand as the drain plug will be less costly than a new tap.
Heck get a plug from an auto recycle yard.
A drain plug does not care what engine or vehicle it is installed on.
Sure, a thread insert is a nice way to go but from experience also the costlier way and very necessary in some applications which IMHO a drain plug is not one.
To add, being on bottom, metal chips are of little concern as it would be very easy to flush and debris out.
