Hello All,

Just wanting to confirm that a Hydraulic shop will have to redo this fitting for me. I took the plug out and didn't see anything that would make me think this fitting is threaded and can be replaced by myself.

Thanks

Looks like toast to me. Is the angle fitting fastened to the cylinder with a hex head screw? It vaguely looks like the head of the screw in the top recess. If so there should be an after market replacement. If it is welded on there still should be a replacement JIC fitting; maybe the tractor dealer. Nothing is impossible including replacing the whole cylinder. Welding probably best done with TIG if you can get it clean enough. Naturally disassemble the cylinder first.

What you see is just a plug that is removable. I'm not really sure what reason they are there for. It would allow you to relieve pressure from either side of the piston.

I've wondered if it is there for access to install fitting. It does not appear welded from the outside. I've wondered about them being brazed or silver soldered on. When removed, the plug allows heat to be applied from the center, inside to out. That's nothing more than a wild guess on my part. My research has brought little to light for answering my own curiosity.

Thanks for the reply, Ron.

Presuming that the top thingy is just a plug as you say, then I assume the square block must be welded to the cylinder wall. it will likely not be possible to do that again without damaging the cylinder / warping the tube.
Yes, take it to a hydraulic shop. hopefully they'll have a clever idea to repair it.

It could be that the square is screwed onto a stubby tube welded to the cylinder, but if you torque it and that turns out not to be the case, you could easily total the cylinder.

Found this video on YouTube: Image Industries - Hydraulic Port Welder Overview - YouTube

Clearly shows that opening is there to aid in installation process, by welding.

I have looked up the contact information for several hydraulic repair shops near me. I will be calling them and see what my options are.

Thanks for the replies

If you look at the base of the fitting you will be able to tell if it is welded on.

I don't see what appears to me as any kind of welding I know of. There is what looks like an irregular height 'collar', not a sloped shoulder as when I stick weld.

I can get a close up picture and post.

Took the cylinder to a hydraulic repair shop. They said it was 'welded', but not in the manner of adding material like MIG, stick, etc. It's fused in some manner.

They agreed that the non-stripped fitting didn't look all that healthy either, so both are being redone. Since the cylinder is going to have to be disassembled for port replacement, they're rebuilding the cylinder also. I'm hoping for Friday as a pick up date. We shall see. They appeared to be pretty booked.

They make hoses, as you'd expect. About 1/2 the cost of ordering from kubota. I'm going to have them make me replacements for almost all the backhoe's hoses. With them being 20+ years old, I don't want to keep tearing into hoe as they start to fail. 6 of them run through a large sleeve, routed through a trough, through the boom. No thanks, doing this once, per every other decade, is often enough. :)

I figured with 30 years of experience to draw from. Gentleman I talked to would likely be able to make short work of the matter.

Parting shot, I was really impressed with their shop. It's only a two person operation, but the shop was meticulous neat and spotlessly clean.
