Stripping Herculiner (roll on bed liner) from steel

Just wanted to post what I discovered tonight. I had some steel that I needed to remove some Herculiner (roll on bedliner), that I sprayed on. I had it on pretty thick.

Originally, I grabbed my sanding, flapper disk for my 4 1/2" angle grinder. Quickly moved to my 7" flapper disk. Even tried a grinding disk before I finally tried a 4", twisted wire rope wheel like this one:

That thing did an awesome job! It was easily 3x faster to remove with that than with any of the other methods.

Since I figured I'm not the only person on here who uses liquid bed-liner, I figured I should share.

Don't have a sandblaster so use a 5000 psi pressure washer for cleaning up steel as well as my nets. It also took off some of that herculiner that I had to take off.

I like the cup style over the wheel style. But wear safety glasses as the wires do break off and go flying.

i prefer the wheel style over the cup myself. Have used a ton of those stripping my old truck down to bare metal.

Regarding stripping, I was striping the latex paint from and exterior steel door and had tried chemical stripping, sanding and brushing. While using a wheel brush I noticed that when it got hot from friction, the latex pealed right off. Half the door took me most of one day. Then I got my portable propane torch and gently warmed the area and then scraped it right off to bare metal with putty knife. Maybe this would work for the Herculiner also since it seems to be a rubber type compound. Just a little warming of the steel to get it slightly hot to the touch was all that was needed to disbond the latex. Might work on other rubber compounds.

I know from experience that PVC pipe primer will lift it right off.

And wearing thick clothing is better than a Tee shirt. Those wires hurt when you pull them out of your tummy...

I have both, the cup style and the wheel style. They both have their uses. But, most of the time, the wheel works better for me.

Never tried heat, or pipe cleaner. I know that stuff will burn, if you happen to run a bead of weld close to it. Boy does it stink as well.
