It began with my tractor surging and I would have to pull the choke half way out for the engine to idle. Next thing the engine wouldnt fire unless I poured gas directly into the carb. I decided the carb needed cleaning so I pulled it off and found broken gaskets and loose intake manifold bolts. I cleaned the carb and reinstalled with new gaskets. Turn the key, engine spins but wont fire. Spark is good and it's getting fuel.

I tried to turn the engine over again and the starter would not work! No clicks or noise, nothing at all. It's been doing this occasionally since I got it. When this happens normally on the second attempt it would work, but now it is totally dead. The battery is fully charged. I checked to make sure the shifter is pressing against the neutral safety switch.

Should I at least hear the solenoid clicking if it was a bad starter?

How many volts are in the battery?

Are the cables clean?

New cables and 12.5 volts.

I was wondering how do you rule out the solenoid?

Take a test light or meter and see if you have power to the starter with key to start.
