Hey guys-
I am going to cut down a dead pear tree which will have about an 8" diameter stump at the base and I want to burn it out. How do I go about doing that? Diesel? Should I wait awhile for it to dry out or can I burn it after I cut down the tree? Thanks in advance for the info. Mike

Even dead tree stumps can be difficult to burn since stumps usually have a different structure than a tree trunk.

If you can bore a hole or two down from the top and a hole(s) in from the side at a low elevation intersecting those vertical holes a chimney effect will usually be created allowing for a better chance of success. Even then it may take some persistence with the diesel fuel until it becomes dry enough to burn. Sometimes if there is no wind a small fan can be useful if in an area where you have elect. power.

It is dead. I saw there are also comercial products you can put into holes drilled into the dead stump that are supposed to break it down over several months. I wonder if these are any good?

I have been burning debris over a poplar stump for 4 years and the stump is still there from ground level down...

An old time method of rotting out a stump is to bore several deep holes from the top and fill them with sour buttermilk...then pour hot wax to seal up the top of the holes...within a year you should be able to just kick in the rotted stump...

There are commercial products available that are supposed to do the same thing...

Sometimes good things take a little longer but I wouldn't want to take that long even if that snake oil worked. I'd have to getter done if I had to use my chain saw to grind it up.

I have three sizes of these stump cookers made from 4' sheet metal. Anything you can put around the stump will reflect and intensify the heat.

I have many of these sweetgum trees that I girdle to kill them and dry them out a couple of months, then I fell them and by the time I've cut up the tree and burned it in the cooker the stump is burned to below grade.

Wrap the stump with any metal that will withstand the heat ..... pour in the charcoal and torch it off.

Get a bag of charcoal and pile up the brickets around and on top of the stump. Then dose it good with lighter fluid and fire it up drink a cold one and enjoy life.:)
