Stump Grinder

I'm considering purchasing a stump grinder to run off the pto of a NH TC29D. The Shaver SC-25 sounds like a pretty decent one for it's size (http://www.beavervalleysupply.com/sectionb/shaversb.htm). Does anyone have any experience or opinion's (pro's/con's) on this model or recommendations for other models?

Whew! That's an expensive toy, and a lot of weight on the back of the little TC29. Overhang isn't great, so it should be OK weight-wise. Loaded tires should help keep the tail from wagging the dog.

You could hire 500 stumps removed (or buy truckloads of saltpeter) for the price of that puppy! The only way a fella can justify an expensive tool like that is:

a.] You are filthy rich (and I hate you) /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
b.] Lots of land, lots of stumps (and I pity you)
c.] Commercial tree and stump removal (but honey, I need it for the business!)

It looks like it's commercial quality. It also looks like you would have to do a lot of fancy hydraulic work to the TC29 to mount it.

I have been looking at 3-pt. stump grinders to go on the L3130 that looks to be number one on my possible list, howver might go up to the L3830.

Anyway, I thought I saw a thread that said the the independent stump grinders are better, quicker and more effective than the 3-pt ones. A used Vermeer 232 ( if my mind is not totally shot) about 35 hp goes for between $5500 up to about 15000! But at least the tractor could be doing something else? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have not a clue since stump grinding is new to me, so is a yard full of stumps and I need to do something about it. Thought of a back hoe to get them out but even the dealers are not too big on that idea. It will take a lot bigger tractor to do it fast and then you have the big holes. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, I am willing to listen to anybody on this. Yeah, help me spend my money /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was removing stumps with my back hole.....which is kinda of small.
It was doing the job pulling on the roots & making a big mess.
I had like 20 stumps to remove, after pulling 3 of them I went
and rented a grinder.
The one I rented was new & it really worked well !
Cost was $200 for 24 hours.
We ran the heck out of that thing 17 stumps ...gone!
Best $200 I've spent in a while /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
If you do decide to rent, make sure all the stumps are cut
low or have some help, so the grinder is workin and not
sittin.
I had my kid run the grinder while I cut 3 other trees down.
Worked out very well for us.

The Shaver unit looks to be a good quality attachment. BUT, and a big BUT!! You would have to have a huge number of stumps to make that thing pay for its oats!!!
I also have quite a few stumps, but after looking at several alternatives, choose to have them done by a local with a stump grinder.
I have a JD 790 and even though Shaver has a model to fit. I thought about all the Hyd. plumbing and honestly figured it would really be better to go a different route.
If I were dead set on buying a stump grinder, I would buy an independent unit, so my tractor would be free for other uses.

Blue - I'd have to agree with your three possibilities for ownership, unfortunately reason number 1 doesn't apply to me and I don't have an excessive amount of property or stumps. Reason number three was going to be my "excuse" except I don't have a stump removal business. I was thinking I could pick up some weekend jobs for stump removal to help pay for the cost but I'm not too sure that's a realistic view since I have alot of my own home projects to work on. For the 15 or so stumps I have I'm sure that renting a grinder makes alot more sense and your right I'd have to get some rear hydraulic reservoirs added to the TC29D or so it appears. The other responses seem to suggest that a rental is the way to go here. Oh well, I hear stump grinding is kind of boring any way, time to look for that next attachment I just gotta have /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif! Thanks for the responses.
