stump pulling

If it's a skinny tree and the stump is high (6-8 feet or more) then you can maybe lever it out by pulling. Otherwise, you will need to pick at the roots with a backhoe or equivalent, to have any hope of getting it out with a tractor.

what he said...

Ive also had luck useing my FEL to dig at the front edge while i curl the bucket and drive forward all at the same time.

I have a Kubota L3400 figured it could pull out a stump, nope! Had better luck with my 2500HD 4X4, going to try a 10,000# winch next and see how that works, I'll let you know

I took 10 stumps out Saturday with my l4740 kubota. I have a narrow bucket I use as a stump buck but I used the forks and found this technique:

1. Put the loader value in the float position
2. Put the tines about 1.5 feet apart.
3. Drive forward with forks slightly tipped so they go into the ground.
4. Drive them in the ground in about 16 inches on one side of the stump.
5. Leaving the value in the float position tilts the forks at a sharp angle downward at the same time drive very slowly forward but careful not to put strain on the loader. This breaks off the roots.
6. Level the forks out as you drive backwards.
7 drive forward again to sever the broken root and take another bite to the next root then tilt the forks forward again. Repeat this process about 10 tines on each side of the stump.
8. push or pull stump out.

This process took me about 25 minutes per 16 in spruce stump in sandy soil.

Note If you cannot tilt the forks forward you went in to far so back up a few inches again

Also You can cut the roots with a saws all if you do not like using your tractor for this purpose.

multi ways to go about getting stumps.

question is what is the most economical way of going about it.

if you have a good amount of stumps to remove, it might be easier, just renting an excavator. and get stumps out that way, and perhaps a few other odd jobs done around the property.

you could hire it out to a tree service, if all you want is stumps grinded down level with surrounding ground.

if you leave say 5 to 6 feet of stump sticking up out of the ground. you can use this extra length as a "lever" and push with FEL

A frame method. instead of hooking a chain or cable around tree and trying to pull it over. place a metal A frame up near the stump. hook chain around bottom of stump. and then place chain up and over the A frame and then on to back of tractor or truck. the A frame causes forces to pull the stump UP and out of the ground. vs trying to pull it over and out.

a stump bucket, for FEL. basically a bucket that is only a couple feet wide and little bit longer than a regular bucket. allowing folks to push the FEL down into the dirt easier and cut into roots.

awe forgot the name, i want to call it a "middle buster" kinda like a plow for 3pt hitch. but meant to pull behind tractor, to help break up ground, might help you tear up roots around the stump. so you can pull it out easier.

pallet forks on FEL can work, but would caution, you risk higher chance possibly messing up the FEL arms and in that only get one of the forks under something and prying, and causing FEL arms to twist to point of bending some. same thing goes with a regular bucket on a FEL and trying to pry stump out by just using corner of the bucket.

when dealing with chains, cables, ropes, etc... never backup to stump and then put pedal to metal, and try to POP the stump out. you will more likely bust the chain / cable / rope. and have a deadly whip coming back at you, that could tear you in half. *been there done that* and had some close calls. always slowly tighten up chain / cable / rope. and pull

myself prefer a backhoe on back of tractor. for stump removal, the backhoe to tear up the tree roots and possible do final pulling of stump. and then use of FEL to get some dirt some place else on property to fill in hole were stump was. and then use backhoe to compact the dirt as, dirt goes back into hole.

granted getting a backhoe for a tractor just to pull stumps would more likely be the most costly. for me i end up re-using backhoe for multi other things. others prefer to just save up projects, and rent an excavator for a day or 2 *shrugs*
