STUMP REMOVAL

I find that digging out large tree stumps with a hoe can be time consuming. Is there such a thing as a "root tooth" device that can be attached to a backhoe to cut through large roots? I have a NH 759C hoe. Thanks for you're imput.

If there is such a thing, where could I find one?

Yes, there is. I was going to cut one out of steel and build it myself but decided to buy the parts and weld it up. The link to MetKit is below. You can see I took some good advice from a friend and added the hardened wear stip to the main 3/4" shank. By the way, MetKit delivered my order amazingly fast. I can pluck stumps out without so much ground damage. Yesterday afternoon, I dug 12 trees out that were less than 6" in diameter along with two old 12" stumps and a larger one that was more of a challenge.

The tough one was a pine tree stump that was 4' high and about 16" in diam. First I loosened the roots with the ripper and cut the side roots. I thought it was cemented in the ground. I did have to put the bucket back on to dig around it because the root bulb was so deep. It went down 3 feet below the ground. Because I snapped the roots first with the ripper and loosened the area, the digging around it took only minutes. I did all of this from one side of the stump which was about 4' high. Once the earth was removed on three sides, I hooked the top of the stump with the hoe bucket and pulled it toward the tractor and pop, over it went. The ripper worked really well, and for trees that are 6" or less in diameter, it plucks them out nicely. My 2 cents.
