If it should be removed, what implement should I buy? :)

You got me there with the stump photo, I was expecting a stump in your back field or side yard.
I have remove several stumps by cutting them out with a chain saw. I actually have a stump chain saw. I bought it new for that purpose.

To remove a stump by chain saw
use a shovel and use the back to pry the soil away from the stump crown (ground level)
cut straight down and make a block pattern
slice off the blocks
repeat the block cuts to 4" below real grade
sneak in side cuts to remove blocks.

Done

Now take the saw back to your bench and wash out the dirt it will be a major mess.
Resharpen your chain and clean out the bar slot.

I invested $100.00 for a stump chainsaw.

It would be interesting to know how they handled the tree once it was down. It would seem to have been a large chunk of wood.

If the stump must be moved because it is in your way and impedes your movements, perhaps these suggestions will aid you in your task? Two tools are definitely needed: maddock and shovel. Adequate sleep, rest, vitamins, a protein based meal, are also needed before undertaking this monumental task. And did I forget to mention a strong back and a weak mind?

I think the easiest on you will be to notify Homeland security that you have observed numerous young men speaking languages unknown to you entering and departing the stump from a hidden entrance carrying electronics, large quantities of fuel and fertilizer and you think you saw one of them putting away a Pakistanian passport. You feel that this stump may be a laboratory or factory for WMDs.

Then move away for a few years while the airforce softens the stump for the naval bombardment and subsequent occupation by the UN forces.

A short 8-10 years later you can return and the stump will be replaced with a school and two hospitals.

Wow! What the heck would you do with the tree once it was cut down? It's not like you could move it...

I often wondered what was the point of cutting trees of that magnificent size. I did see a mill that was set up around a tree, then moved as it cut the tree into boards. But it was a small, easily move mill. The tree was held stationary. I suppose they must have had something similar back in the day?

I would like to see how they did it.

Merry Christmas!

Large logs were often split with explosives, like this "little" large one:
