Good morning all,

Seeking some advice on how to deal with the stump that is right against my pole barn.

I'm currently working on a 96'x60' riding arena on my property. Keep in mind this building sat for almost 11 years, unused and neglected. I've only been here about three years and have been working towards bringing the arena back to life and converting it over to a shop / garage.

The stump in question is on the rear sidewall of the arena. Four trees grew right along the building and grew tall enough to start damaging the gutters (15'). This is the only stump I'm having some questions about. I'm getting ready to install new metal on the entire barn and this stump has been cut flush with the ground. I've dug around it a bit, cutting roots and such, but I'm left with an ugly problem. The inner and outer grade boards are fine. The barn does have a concrete floor, 8" thick.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I think I would remove the metal over the stump and dig around the stump for placement of a grab chain, and use tractor to pull out.

Could also have a stump grinder grind it down and pour Round Up over it.

You gotta come at it from UNDER the stump. Dig a hole big enought that you can undermine the stump and it will fall into the hole. I did that with a HIGE piece of concrete wall that would not budge, I dug under it, it fell into the hole then I dragged it out in one piece.

Get a sawzall with a 8" wood/combo blade and cut along the building and notch a channel for a chain and pull it out.

I save back an old worn out chain saw bar and chain just for jobs like this when you're going to hit dirt. Just be careful no matter how you decide to take it out. And I'll second taking the metal off in that area since it's going to come off anyway. I'd also get some Pramitol stump killer to make sure it doesn't try to come back.

Hard to believe how fast some of those can grow-I'll admit to letting a few just about get out of hand before taking them out.
