Stumps

/ Stumps #21
Do you have a box blade?

Something I've had some success with is dropping the scarifiers into the roots surrounding the tree (if you have room), keeping forward tension on the tractor & ripping the roots up bit by bit.

Takes a little while to get around the tree stump, but you can back up to the stump & pry it up once done... The largest stump I got this way was about a 15" ash.

Happy tractoring! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Here is how I do it. I rented the excavator from the same place I bought my tractor. These were the stumps from 4 red pines that were damaged badly by an ice storm a couple years ago. The stumps were about 18" in diameter. At first I thought I could dig around them with my plow and loosen them up and eventually pop them out with the loader. Boy, was I wrong. They were in the ground about 4' deep and had 4 or 5 roots the size of your leg sticking out plus many smaller ones. It took me about 15 to 20 minutes each to dig them out in sandy soil. It probably would have been cheaper to hire it done but that wouldn't be any fun. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
