Stupid oil change question

Oh, I try to do what I can:

Got a "check engine" light last week. Disconnected the battery to kill the light. So far, it has not come on again, but haven't driven it much. Walked over to the auto parts store
today at lunch and bought an air filter element, on the chance that the old one is plugged-up.

If the check engine light comes on again, I guess I will have to go to the trouble of having the auto parts store read the code for me, so I can decide if
it is something I want to deal with.

Since this truck HAS to go away next year (long story) I don't want to put too much money into now.

you can get code readers for well under $20 now. You can even do it with a smart phone app and a $10 bluetooth conector.

You know how to use the internet so you can look up the codes and what symptoms or problems cause said codes. NOt saying you have to do it if you dont want to but if you have any interest i am just showing you there are ways to pull codes without having a $2500 snap on reader. The better ones are better but even on my phone and like $10 bluetooth device i can see real time data on all the sensors that allow it on a certain vehicle and i can see all the codes and has a look up feature.
