It looks like the tractor I'm thinking of buying (Yanmar F or FX series-25 to 30 HP) does not have a sub frame kit made for it. That means I will need to settle for a 3 point hook-up. The last time I used a hoe with a 3 point hook-up was many (18?) years ago. It was a terrible experience--wiggled and swung all over the place, almost completely out of control. People have been saying the new stuff is much better designed, almost as good as a frame mount. I really need to know if this is right. If a buy a tractor that uses a 3-point backhoe and it sucks I'm gonna be stuck with something I don't like. And I know you wouldn't want that to happen to me. Right? I hope there is someone out there that has ACTUALLY USED both types and can clearly explain the difference. Thanks guys---you're doin a great job. By the time I make this decision I'll probably be tooo old to use the damn thing.

grsr3,
I have used the 3pt mount AND subframe mount on my set up as explained in the PM I sent you. Using the 3pt mount alone, the lateral forces (when digging sideways) are the ones you need to watch out for. When trenching staight in line with the tractor, the 3pt will absorb those forces quite well. If you can stabilize the 3pt connection by adding a stabilizer strap (some have used adjustable top links) on each side of the hoe and connect to your tractor, this will help tremendously. I have dug many feet of trenches and dug up giant rocks, tree stumps, etc with just the 3pt connection. But without a doubt, when I installed my subframe, there was an immediate and noticeable stability and rigidity change.

Something I would consider is sub frame verses 3 pt and strength. Without a sub frame you take a chance breaking the tractor at the bellhousing. That is the weakest point and the most costly to repair.

Well I just purchased a backhoe for my B7500 with frame mount and it is awsome. You can pick the rear wheels off the ground for added stability from the weight of the tractor and it also allows you to pick up your stabilizers, push down with the backhoe and set yourself over a few feet without getting back in the drivers seat... Very strong, very stable, doesn't abuse tractor...

I chose the 3pt. hitch type for my tractor because I change attachments so often. I may hook it up to bury a goat or dig up a stump and half hour later have plows or box blade attached. I have dug footers, sewer lines, water lines, and graves in this dry S.C. red clay and have not yet had any trouble except digging up stumps I have bent and broke the Cat 1 hitch pins. No big deal but that area takes a lot of abuse and digging up stumps is probably the hardest work your hoe will do. I can see a subframe being more ridgid but I hate the thought of dropping the lift arms and bolting the subframe up everytime. Some say it doesn't take any more time but to me it just looks like it would. Another plus is with the 3pt. hitch your hoe will fit other tractors without modification.

My subframe is permanently mounted to the tractor, takes 2 minutes to take off backhoe,2-3 minutes to put 3 pt arms on and about 5 minutes to reattach backhoe after you remove 3 pt arms. The subframe also accepts mmm

It just depends on what tractor and backhoe that you have. I don't have to take my lift arms off or my third arm and the sub-frame hoe goes on and off in just a few minutes. I know that I am like you in that I wouldn't like to take the arms off every time nor would I bolt and unbolt anything. That is one of the many reasons that I like the brand that I have.

I'm curious, If anyone with a FORD and sub frame, from Woods could tell me or show a pic, of how the sub frame mounts, but more important to me is how it goes around the axle. Do the three point hitch lift arms have to be removed? Or does the frame have clearance for them?
I presently have a 3 point hoe and would like to upgrade to a sub frame and newer Woods hoe.
Thanks.
Al

Go to Woods web site and look at the owners manual complete with pics and mounting instructions. I did that to see how they mounted their hoe to a Branson when I was modifing a sub frame for mine.
