First thing to do is give the local inspector a call and see what the code is. You will find that a packaged unit will be at least double to triple the price of regular furnace. I agree with what others posted a heat pump is all but useless up north because of the cold temps the electric back up would be running more than the heat pump.

In this area we must put all gas fired equipment up at least two feet off the floor of the garage.

Any outside packaged unit will use outside combustion air for the burner. Just remember when sizing your duct to have at least 20 larger return if possible.

How large of a garage do you have?

hope this helps

If inside fumes get to the combustion area then the heat echanger has some defects - like holes in it.

The combustion chamber flue gasses are complety separated from the air being heated.

Our company installs over 500 furnaces a year. I have seen brand new furnaces with bad heat exchangers. I have seen gas valves that leak right from the factory. I have seen carbon monoxide, raw gases come from places you would not imagine. That is why I said, you won't be guaranteed as it can happen. I just wanted to let the poster know he still could have problems.

1*That's what I like about my county no codes no inspectors no hassles.
2*Got a price from a local heating company - about $1500 installed complete .
This is A regular forced air furnace and a regular whole house AC unit enclosed in one case designed for outdoor installation.
It is not a heat pump in any way shape or form.
3* as I stated It's not a heat pump.
4*30' deep by 52' wide.Super insulated and has 4 insulated 10 x 7 doors.
This is a special insulation which the insulation company verifies that by using it,it allows you to reduce the normal capacity required to heat and cool the garage by up to 50 percent. By using smaller heating and cooling units it reduces the purchasing cost and operating cost.

***I realize that but if this unit might reduce such risk even slightly and will do the job of heating and and colling the garage while saving energy cost and the price is acceptable why go with anything else.

I agree, if it makes you comfortable, go for it. As far as the open flames like on a unit heater, I wouldn't ever let it bother me. Now you can check out a sealed combustion unit heater. Reznor makes one. This way you could eliminate all of the duct and your flame is in a sealed compartment.
