An orange one
I have a 140' x 110' garden in the country. Last year was first year. Neighbor plowed it for me and I spot tilled where garden plants were set. This year I've purchased a Landpride RTR1266 tiller. Plan is to till entire garden, plant, and then use walk behind TroyBilt Horse to till between garden rows to help keep weeds down.

This piece of land had a few trees on it prior to last year and also some sumac. There is still a couple of stumps and some sumac roots that I would like to get out. I purchased a King Kutter sub soiler to go through before tilling and hopeful cut and pull up as many roots left behind that I can. Couldn't afford to spend $600 on the King Kutter heavy duty sub soiler so I got the less expensive one.

As long as I run in low gear at a very slow speed should I be ok as far as damage to the sub soiler (because this one does not have a sheer pin)?

How fast can you react to a load? And what would your reaction be?

Low gear is the most powerful pull!

Weight and hp of the tractor would be good to know. BTW, that's one serious garden! Hope you have a big family to help harvest and eat what you're gonna' produce!

I have that sub soiler and have had to reinforce the it in the hitch area and have bent the shank into a ~3" "smile". All this with a Case-IH 385 (43 engine HP, 5000#) trying to cut roots around stumps. If you have a strong tractor you CAN tear it up.

I used a King Kutter subsoiler (the $150 version from Tractor Supply) and my 2005 Kubota B7510HST to plow the soil around my place for landscaping when the house was built in 2005. Work was done in May an the end of the rainy season, so the soil was damp. No problem. Just took my time so nothing would break.

Good luck

I have the KK $150 subsoiler as well, it would stop my 40hp tractor no problem when it hit something big. I only sub-soiled at a walking pace, about the same speed I would till at. Lots of attachments will stop the correctly sized tractor dead.

My cheap subsoiler has a sheer pin. Could stop my 32hp 3,500lbs Kubota & not sheer the pin. The pin sheered a handful of times in pretty loose soil too. No damage to the subsoiler or tractor. Think I got it from Northern Tool.

If it starts to look like this, stop.

unless the roots are in the way let them rot and add organic matter to the soil
