Happy New Year to everyone!...... I have been stalking around TBN reading all about the big snows and time consuming snow removal posts everyone is talking about. I was really becoming quite envious due to hardly any seat time here in NC. It is quite a bit colder here then normal but no snow!!
I wasn't going to write this but I thought it would be a little break from the snow removal stories.
This is how it happened - my wife told me our last "city" water bill almost tripled! So as I investigated I found we had a leak somewhere between the house and the meter. Meter is located at the road here. I could not locate the the leak due to no indication on top of the ground. The existing piping was black Endopoly tubing about 25 years old, so I decided to replace the whole line.
Here comes the good part! How do I dig the trench? Well I went directly to TBN and started searching, I found trencher, middlebuster, subsoiler, and one guy even did it with a one shovel plow! Well since the frost line here is only 8 to 10 inches I decided to try the subsoiler. I purchased the yellow countyline from TSC for $159.99. Now I had a new implement and looking forward to some seat time here in the middle of winter!
Here comes the not so good part, with the 250 feet of trench I was looking at I mounted the Subsoiler, positioned my L3400 on the line of the new water line. Put the tractor in low, 4WD, dropped the subsoiler and stepped on the Hydro Peddle
My seat time lasted about a whole 15 minutes!!
The tractor and subsoiler worked so well I couldn't believe it. I cleaned the trench out with a trench shovel and it was a perfect 16" deep and 3 to 4 inches wide.
The subsoiler cut right through the top 1 inch of frozen dirt and the roots that I hit with it didn't stand a chance. Thanks again to TBN I have a new implement that I can put to good use, and I was able to make a well informed decision.
I am going to hook to the back blade today to cover the trench but I am here to tell you it is going to take at least an hour or two even if I have to get off the tractor and just listen to that deisel talk to me!!
Thanks again TBN!
