Fellas, I just had the road up to my building site redone. The banks recut, the road widened, many ruts and washouts smoothed and water runoffs created. Now I have raw banks on the upper side and wide shoulders on the down side that need planting. I want to draw/keep deer on the property. I am going to plant CHICORY,red CLOVER and some ALFALFA in the field up top but WHAT should I plant along this road?
I looked at a site called "barnyard products.com" that has "sugar" RYE grasses. The DEER version is $60 for 1/2 acre......the COW version is $70 for an acre. I read the differences....deer has 15% alfalfa and mostly RYE. The COW has almost all RYE. Can someone give me some advice on planting a deer attractant that is the most COST effective? I don't intend to hunt along this road so maybe just plain old CO-OP priced RYE....
Ideas? Oh, yes, I have ordered "Crown Vetch" seeds for the steep banks but read that it takes two YEARS for that to catch on.....:confused2: Thanks

You might want to consider winter wheat if you can get it as it will keep growing and reseeding an adds nitrogen to the soil.

There is cereal rye (annual) and rye grass (perennial). What you want is a perennial. As a somewhat general rule, deer can’t digest most grasses, but sugar rye is an exception. I’m not sure how attractive it is after a certain point, but they like it a lot in the early stages. More often than not, seeds that have pictures of deer on the bag cost more, but you don’t really get any more. Check with your local feed/seed store about getting some of the rye grass seed and a little clover seed as well. They can get you what grows best in your area and save you some money as well. Winter wheat will get going fast and is a good cover crop, but it’s an annual. Yes, some seed will sprout next year, but it doesn’t actually “re-seed” itself, and it doesn’t add any nitrogen to the soil. Some sort of perennial needs to be planted.

Thanks guys,
The TBN brain trust is always terrific. IS WINTER WHEAT an annual or perinial? I hate doing the roadsides every year.
Next, the RYE'S.....one is annual, the other perinial and deer don't like 'em.
That sugar rye.....the co-op has never heard of it?
Any other ideas....again, along my 3/4 mile drive thru woods. Fed deer tend to remain....:D

Winter wheat is an annual. It would have to be done every year, and it’s not really all that attractive through the summer.
It seems the high sugar rye grasses haven’t caught on here like the have overseas for cattle and sheep farmers, so maybe you’ll have to order online.
