I just changed the oil for the first time on my Mahindra 2810.
The manual suggests 10w-30w oil but I can't find anything other than 15w-40w in a diesel rated oil (which I used, Amalie). So far we have had a very cold winter & I am concerned about the oil being too thick (it poured like molasses, it was about 8*F). Any suggestions? Can I use a synthetic? I only have 25 hours on the tractor so far. I would rather waste the oil & filter that I just used, than harm the engine.

Hi...

I went with AMSOIL's Series 3000 Synthetic 5W-30 Heavy Duty Diesel Oil... Link here...

They have 10w 30 & other weights for diesel too...

I think Mobil-1 10w-30 synthetic is diesel rated too...

Hi,
My tractor has the same recommendations and came filled w/ 10w-30 from the factory. You should be able to get 10w-30 at Chappell's. They sell it in qts and 2.5 gal jug. When I checked it last (semiwarm) the oil flowed nicely. jimg

Thanks guys, I went with Mobil-1, it does say it's diesel rated.
It's 25* out now & it poured nicely, so I feel better about the cold starts.

I'm using Rotella 5W40 full synthetic and loving it. 15w40's fine for the summer but the tractor turns over easier with the lighter synthetic in the winter.

I use 0W40 Mobil 1 in the winter and 15W50 in the summer in my Gravely. In a diesel, I'd be inclined to not go lower than 5W. The 5W40 sounds ideal for all season.

I use 10w40 in my diesel Benz, Exxon Superflo, of course since I used to help make the stuff. Most of it is made by Exxon's new process that makes dino oil almost as good as synthetic from a new-in-1998 plant in Baytown, TX. Exxon never made a big deal out of it because they merged with Mobil about that time and had Mobil 1 available in the EM market place.

any weight oil is ok too run a 0w30 - 0w40 will work in diesels in europe and other parts 0w oils are used along with 5w30 oils in HD applications. Anyoil that is CF rated or for that matter SL would work on generic diesel low speed engines other than specific applications which might have latest greatest technology thus needing a CI-4 diesel oil. Tho everyone will hark no it's been done alot and the specs are overly demanding.. many a vw and other foriegn diesel makes use these products with great success.. diesels/gas engines are stupid they don't know the difference.

Diesel engines put MUCH more soot in the oil. This requires a different solubulizer and was a problem with the early synthetic oil. Most modern oils now are good for both gasoline and diesel, but this has not always been the case. The solubulizer may be about the only additive in synthetic oils. Otherwise, the oil won't hold much soot, and it would clog up the works.

modern engines and older engines are the same in ag applications.. only exception are some epa regulated high output ones used in certian applications. The SL spec is designed to handle "soot" .. CI-4 oils are for 7-8% soot levels which are actualy even higher than what real world testing has showed to be the case with newer oct+ engines.

Since it's gets so cold there, I'd find me a synthetic 5w-40w (your choice of diesel rated oil) and stick with it year round. There isn't any need in worrying about what the weather will be that way. You may even get by with a 5w-30w, since I don't know the summer temps there.
