Thans for the information guys. Ill definately look into the Case tractors. A friend of mine called me and told me about a dealer about 40 miles from me that had a John Deere 6403 MFWD and loader on the lot. The tractor was a trade in and had about 700 hours when traded. The dealership has been using the tractor around the yard and it now has about 1000 hours. Havent gone down to talk price yet. What do you guys think of the 6403. I presently have a 2wd 5403 and have been told by some that its kinda a low end tractor. Would the same be true for the 6403? Also, whats the difference in the 6403 and the 6405? thanks

The best bargains in mid sized tractors will USUALLY be in the 1060's through early 1980's models. You get a modern tractor with parts support AND HP per $$$$.

A few of my personal favorites in the 80 to 110 hp range;

Massey Ferguson built a few. 1100/1105 being the best of the lot.

Ford 8000/8600's (Best SOUNDING diesel Ford ever built!)

IH, 806/856, 966/986,

Deere 4020, 4230, 4240, 4250

Quite a few decent choices in Oliver, Case, ALLIS CHALMERS, ect....

Now dont stop short farm with junk. go ahead & name those by oliver, case, & allis-chalmers. Anything thats older will need something fixed sooner or later. Same thing can be said for newer stuff. Its funny, I'm looking for an 80/90 hp tractor to pull hay equip. I find alot of newer stuff with high hrs, & older stuff seems to have medium hrs. Not alway, but alot of times. I'm with you FWJ, I like older stuff. I've been using it for years & have had very good luck. I'm currently considering a MF 275 with 1600 hrs for 7500. Older farmer I know just bought a deere 5425 to replace it. I said why do you want to do that, he said VANITY. I find that funny. If you got the money then I guess! I dont have the money. Todd.:)

Doc, if your time is valuable I would get something newer for field work and something that has been depreciated for the woods (still in good mechanical shape). This is particularly true if all the repairs will be done by a dealership as repairs on older equipment would defray the cost of new stuff.

the 03 series isnt even sold in Europe. (they would embarrass their customers if they did) They are an attempt of Deere to compete with cheaper brands that use cheaper parts.
I dont doubt their reliability or ruggedness because they are as good as any other 6000 series, i just think that a 9F/3R transmission is a bit restricted in the 100hp class.
So i wouldnt pay the price of a new tractor, when i would get only a Deere 6403.... Then i'd seek a used 6400 or 6410 for the same money...
