The book offers a variety of fluids and oils and at times contradicts itself. I'm curious about the engine oil you are using. While I've not had any problems starting in cold weather, I'm thinking your engine oil offers better cold start protection then what I've got in my engine. Might go to that at the next oil change.
Yes, A 5w40 synthetic will flow much better at cold temps.
One question - what are you referring to in changing fluid in the "finals"? I've eyeballed the owners manual and see instructions on changing the engine oil, hydro trans fluid, and front axle fluid.
The gearboxes by the wheels...On the front axle, there is a fill, and a drain plug on each final, if you look from the front, on the inside of the wheel you will see a fill plug on top and drain at the bottom..there are gears in there.... as I suggested pulling the front wheels will make life much easier. Then you have the drain in the center of the axle
Also when filling the front axle..The fill is on the right,on top of the axle tube, your sight glass is on the left, it takes quite a while for the oil to make it from the right side, to the left side of the axle seeping through bearings etc to get a accurate level.
On the rear axle these are the gear boxes on either side of the center of the rear axle, they each have a low spot where the drains are. However they fill when you are adding the tractor fluid at the back of the tractor.
To be honest, I read the book to get oil capacities and types..Then I crawled around the tractor and discovered the rest on my own, so I don't know what their instructions say.
