UPDATE: A two-truck collision with a fatality closed Highway 49 in both directions at Nishinam Gulch Road Thursday night.

The accident was reported at 6:11 p.m. and involved a Ford F-350 and a smaller pickup, according to California Highway Patrol spokesman Greg Tassone.

A man was driving a Ford F-350 northbound on Highway 49 north of Sun Shadow Circle, near the Independence Trail, hauling an å…Žnormous backhoe on a very long 46-foot trailer, Tassone said.

As he began heading downhill, the truck sustained some sort of brake failure and began to pick up speed, Tassone said. As the Ford truck entered a curve, the trailer overturned into the oncoming lane, with the backhoe landing on a GMC pickup in the southbound lane.

The backhoe crushed the cab with the driver trapped inside; as of 9 p.m., crews were still working to extricate him. They also were working to confirm he was alone in the truck and his identity, Tassone said.

There was no estimated time for reopening Highway 49 and vehicles were being diverted at Newtown and Pleasant Valley roads.

Just because you can pull it doesnt mean you should . I use to do water and sewer installs , pulled a 310b John deere . Air brake dump truck single axle with air brake trailer , even with that if we had to stop fast there was a pucker factor . I see the guys pulling big iron behind their f 350 , 450 and 550 , it is scary .

That's all exactly what I was thinking. If that rig isn't air brake territory I don't know what is. That was easily over 32k behind that pickup. 16 tons is no joking matter. I highly doubt that truck could stop that load on the flat in an emergency without a hope and a prayer.

I saw a commercial with a Chevy Silverado 3500 towing a 27,000lb boat. Towing and stopping are a big difference.

That towing capacity is a little less than half of an 18 wheeler . Thats borderline insane . Sure it can pull it , but can you stop it or control it in an emergency ? I dont think so .

I wonder what brake failure killed both truck hyd and e brake, and trailer brakes. Before I'd flip and hurt others I'd be downshifting.. You can replace a trans. Heck, lots of options to get some drag in an emergency..
