supersteer

   / supersteer #2
Supersteer is a feature on New Holland "Boomer" compact tractors. The front axle is mounted onto a pylon that also turns, allowing the axle to rotate into the turn. This allows the front wheels to turn in a tighter radius. It adds ~$1300 in list price to the tractor. With Supersteer, the 17LA loader (rather than the 16LA) needs to be used, but the loader's prices are similiar.

Several people on this forum have SuperSteer, and they seem to like it. It does cause a little "contrary" motion of the loader when turning, but the owners have reported that it is something you adapt to quickly. SuperSteer is probably something that you don't miss if you've never had it.

Very interesting. Thanks. The picture was nice as well. I assume this is only available on the 4wd models? Any special extra problems with the rotating drivetrain?

again, thanks

Yes, SuperSteer is only available on the FWD models. I don't remember any problems posted on this web site within the past year concerning the SuperSteer feature. Do a search of TBN using "SuperSteer" and "Problems", set Search Options to "and" - nothing much related to problems with the SuperSteer comes up. By the way, the SuperSteer option is also on the TN line (and possibly others, I don't know)

soundguy, i have a 33d w/supersteer. it has it's good points and bad points. i don't think i would get it again on a new tractor. i have a problem with the tires rolling off the rim when i have the bucket loaded and take a some what of a sharp turn. i have put extra air in the tires and even thought about filling them with foam , but it will stiffin the ride.

tgello, what kind of tires are on your tractor and how fast are you taking those turns? I've got a 33D with SS that's supposed to be delivered next weekend; I wouldn't think tires rolling off the wheels is supposed to happen if the tires are inflated to the proper pressure.

I've just had my TC 40D w/ SS for a week now, but I've been doing mostly loader work, trying to get a little better at using it. I've been mostly getting full loads and making tight circles to dump it back to the other side of the pile (I know its not very productive and my neighbors probably think I'm crazy, but it's been too wet to do much else). Anyway, I sure haven't seen my tires act like they are going to roll off the rims. They seem to stay perfectly upright and in good contact with the ground. I'd agree on checking the tire pressure.

The only problem I've had with SuperSteer is that I also got the quick detach bucket. Lining it up to reattach is a little tricky, as the front end moves in the opposite direction you're turning the wheel slightly. I had heard about this before and even test drove one for that very reason and didn't think it was bad, but I didn't try lining up with a bucket like that. I'm already getting better at it so I am still very glad I got SuperSteer.

tgello, the tire pressure is probably low. The owners manual for my NH 1920 with 27x8.50-15 Firestone turf tires called for 20 lbs. pressure. I contacted Firestone via email and they stated the max pressure on the 4 ply was 30 lbs. I increased the pressure and it eliminated the problem.

wow ,i brain faded on this subject...sorry. my tires have the correct pressure. it happened a couple times ,mostly when its wet or theres snow on the ground. with bucket loaded and going very slow..don't know what to tell you,but for the amount its needed i would pass on getting it again...tgello

soundguy34421,
I have super steer on my 40d. I have not mowed with it yet, but I really like the turning ability when working in tight places with the loader. Yes, it takes a little bit to getting used to, but it has its advantages in movement.
I also have had no tire problems what so ever, although you did make me look. /w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif
