SUV hit by train, what were they thinking???

You know Jimmyj it takes all kinds. I don't think there is a single major RR crossing in my area that hasn't had a vehicle/train accident. I know one factor is - it is difficult to gage the speed of a train coming at you when you are very near or at a crossing. Rather than simply risk it all - most will stop and wait - some won't.

In just about every case that we worked, their first claim was that they simply didn't see the train. We'd usually find out later on that they were texting, talking on the cellphone or involved in an argument, though that was tough to get enough proof. I think there has been about three instances lately where kids have been run down by a train because they were walking on the tracks and texting, simply had so much concentration on the little box that they didn't hear the train coming

I have to confess that I have driven around guard rails when they failed to open after a train came thru but never without very carefully checking for trains. Where I used to live the traffic guards would stick in the closed position frequently and you had to drive around them. It was a single track with at least a mile of visibility in each direction, so it was easily seen whether a train was coming or not.

In that video it looked like the same vehicle crossed then made a 180 and tried to come back across apparently without looking at all.

Never race a train, they always win...... even if it is a tie...................the crossing lights and arms are there for a reason. It is the same as stop signs, they just don't go out and plant them wherever they want, they are there for a reason. But there is always someone who thinks the signs are there for everyone else, they have more important things to do, that hot dog at 7-11 just can't wait. final score on this one: train 1; bubble headed driver 0. I just feel sorry for the passengers in the vehicle, and the train. 1 person screwing up a whole bunch of other peoples day.......

Cheers

2 counts of crossing when gates down, u turn in middle of road, dangerous driving, X counts of attempted murder ( one for each person in the vehicle) and one count of attempted suicide ... pull their driving license for life and at least 1 year in jail ..... no brains = no driving, ever!

From somebody that used to have a job that on occasion would require me to walk RR tracks, sometimes a mile without crossing another road. When you are out in the middle of no where an oncoming train is mostly silent. You will not hear it coming until it is within yards of you. then you find out if your are within 50 yards of the train when he goes by, you are still too close.

My goodness. That is terrible. I wonder if the driver still has a license? Bad jusdgement doesn't even begin to describe that person.

Simple fix some places are now doing is a barrier (guard rail, concrete barrier, or tall curb) on the road center line so cars can't go around the gates. Far less expensive than 4 crossing gates.
