Sometimes our hobbies can not be priced in cost.

It's my opinion that hobbies should never be priced in cost. They should be priced in value to your Soul. That's why I was poking fun at Mike (oddballs). He gardens for his Soul. He gets as much reward from giving people his produce as he does from eating it himself. And it gets him out of the house and off this Internet. :)

Guess we need an "Amen" button? We all get our "pay" in different ways, not always in cash.

kinda the same as feeding birds ain't it? Would hate to ever calculate what we spend there but we continue to do it...and it ain't over yet...the rose breasted grosbeaks will be arriving in about a month (and when they land here they come in a caravan...had 18 males at the feeder at one time 2 years ago when they landed). And then the orioles will arrive (they don't stick around long but nice to see around the jelly feeder for a few weeks). And then we get the indigo buntings. And lately more and more scarlet tanagers. My grandpa was one of those "leave me alone" guys (I never did ever get to know him well)...in addition to his large veggie garden he tended red raspberries and concord grapes (both very much "leave me alone" pursuits to do it right). Sometimes our hobbies can not be priced in cost.

Yeah, I feed the birds too. I probably feed 100 to 150 pounds of bird seed per year. I buy sunflower seed in 40# bags and mix it about 9.5 to one with chicken scratch. It attracts most, but not all birds.

Could not figure where all the sunflower seeds were going. Until I saw a long armed raccoon with a mouthful of seeds hanging on the tree.

I was curious how your seasons compare to ours. I'm in Northern Missouri, Central Midwest. Our Asparagus is just coming up for the season.

I never ever got the hang of "climate zones" but I am at 39.56N (there is a google map link on my website if you want to see it) and very mild temperatures for about 100 miles inland. Min temp this last winter 0.9C. Max never reached 40C in 13 years. It is getting warmer though. Mean annual temp is up 2C from when we came here - 14 to just topping 16 in 2015 and this year is higher than any. Mins are much better over the last 7 or 8 years too. We used to have quite a lot of below frezing nights each winter with 3 or 4 down to minus 6C. That means I have been unable to grow citrus, but I keep chancing it and a lemon and two oranges have survived the last two winters. I also have a 5 y.o. date palm outside that I grew from seed. Something I have always done and failed to keep alive. I have three new seedlings this year too. Anybody know how to tell male from female trees at a young age?

Put the whole ear (husk silk cob) in the microwave for 5min. Fastest way to cook it. Taste pretty darn good too.

Good luck to superCslim, down there in Nowata. I hope he can make a buck, cause that "soul food" don't cut it when one is hungry.

I doubt I'll be making anything other than a blister come harvest time. But maybe I can get so money back to maintain my fleet of pre-1960s tractors and implements lol

Thanks for the replys everyone. Like I've said I'm not imagining a sea of money. I'm pretty sure we won't make anything for a few years. We have paid enough in tractors, implements, and fixes to them that even max yield on our 5 acres wouldn't cove it. Unless I can talk you guys into $10 an ear?

That's why I made reference to Mike (oddballs). He's a very good farmer. I think he raises a Garden for the right reasons. No delusional expectations. :D
