Synthetic oil

Recently I bought an old beater from my BIL. He had bought it from some guy that was getting deported.

Bil told me he thought it had synthetic in it but isn't sure. I can I add regular oil to it now and can I change the oil and put regular in it.

I seem to remember that the HD dealer told me they couldn't be mixed and once you use synthetic you can't go back. My bike is the only thing I use it in because it saves buying 3 types of oil.

What should I do not really knowing what's in it?

Mix away and it makes no difference. Synthetic is a "better" product because things start easier and lubrication starts earlier in the run cycle. Engine oils mix but maybe add now and change when you get around to it.

Research apparently shows that proper oil changes with regular dino oil is as good as synthetic for older equipment but those are fighting words. Synthetic costs more but you can go longer between changes. For me I use synthetic everywhere I can, even in older things. No problems ever.

If it were me and it was a beater I would run something like Delvac 30W or even 15W40 for at least the first oil change just to start to clean things out. Then I'd assess and probably go synthetic.

Check the syn container. Usually it will say that it mixes with anything of the sort.....other oils.

On what to use, I think the oil display at WW says it all. No where in the store do they have more of the "same things of sort" than in the oil section of the auto dept. Speak well of the different opinions you will get. WW doesn't stock something that doesn't sell so it speaks for itself.

YES you can mix ... the oil becomes the lower standard oil ( less flow at lower temps and can't handle the synth higher temps ) ... doesn't hurt the engine or oil.

you can switch back and forth in older machines ( but the synth may weep out past any hardened oil seals, and you may burn a bit more at startup )

BUT if the engine spec calls for synth , use synth
