I bought a cub cadet and I was wondering how many hours it should have before I switched to a synthetic oil? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Welcome to TBN. Awesome site.

Some on here have said they change to synthetic as soon as the get her home. And from what I've read here I believe that you could do that. Chances are very slim that you'd need any warranty work that they would then ask about oil used and then possibly negate the warranty if you switched to syn. to soon.
But some brands of tractors have a special oil in for the 1st few hours and do not want that original changed out until you have x amount of hours on your tractor.
So, you see it's not a simple question. If it were me I'd ask the dealer that question to see his response.
Sorry for the wishy-washy response .....

Dittos on the welcome to TBN! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

In addition to asking your dealer, I also suggest doing a Search in this forum (Oil, Fuel & Lubricants), or just start reading any thread with 'synthetic' in the Subject line since your question has been asked before by others, many others. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The last new tractor I got I switched over at 50 hours. I ran the break in procedure on the oil that came in the tractor. When I put in the Amsoil 15-40 HD Marine it was the wrong time of year for me to be loading the engine up with work. So I got the old dump truck out and chained the tractor to the truck. Put my son in the seat and signaled him to apply the brake as I pulled him 1.2 miles. Stopped and let it idle to cool down a little and did it again on the trip back.

While pulling that truck we had enough load to warm that Perkins up and turned the exhaust pipe white(on the outside) just above the muffler. Had just a little oil use before switching it over but after pulling that truck there has been no oil use since. That was 150 hours ago.

I like to load the engine up when breaking it in. Put enough load on it to work it hard but still have enough left that the engine will increase rpm's if you give it a little more fuel. Don't lug it.

Some years back I subsoiled 20 acres of pasture to break in a rebuilt IH D239 engine. I did that with Amsoil in it right after the rebuild. It worked out well also.

That's just the way I do it and I'm sure others have different ways that work for them also. Good luck.

Synthethic oil isto slick for the rings to properly seat in the break in process. Use normal oil for the firdt 50 -100 hours then you are safe to switck over.

No offense, but this has been discussed before and it's not true. It can take longer for the rings to seat, but they will seat properly. There are cars that come directly from the factory with synthetic oil and there are TBNers who have run synthetic from mile and hour zero.

I ran the factory break-in oil for first 50 hrs. I switched to synthetic when I did 1st oil change at the 50 hr service.

This has worked out fine for me.

They can't do that - by federal law (the Moss-Magnusen warranty act), if they require you to use only a certain kind of oil or filter to keep the warranty in force, they must provide it to you at no additional cost.

Welcome to TBN!

I would also use the search functionally since this topic has been brought up time-and-time again.

I do not wait any # of hours to switch. I switch early as I can since it will hurt zero. Never had any issues to date. I will take longer ring seating and a little more oil used, but that is me. Less wear though! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Under warranty laws you must use the grade of oil specified, but the brand cannot be specified unless they provide it to you. You also must change it at least as often as the warranty specifies.

I have heard mixed reports on rings not seating when starting out with synthetic oil. I would probably use the manufacturers oil thru the breakin period and then go to synthetic, but this is just my opinion.
