I've got a requirement to use the1000 pto option to drive a round baler. The shaft that comes out of the tractor is a 540 6 spline and baler pto shaft is a 1000 pto with a 20 spline. The tractor has both 540 & 1000 rpm capability via a lever in the cab. I've tried an adapter but that became loose and rocking after about 30 bales. I've tried to change out the pto shaft head ( the 20 spline female side) with the 540 version but it was size universal joint ( New Holland dealer tried this ) any ideas..?

Look at replacing the whole shaft with a 540 version ~ $1000, but I'm not sure that it will fit with with the 1000 rpm gearbox and slip clutch. Does anybody know?

Dedaisy, I would think a good weld shop in the area could cut off the 20 spline universal coupler and reweld a standard 6 spline one in place for a reasonable fee. That's where my mind is going and save the original for just in case you ever need to go back. Hope this helps you out and I think it will be the most cost effective also.

I wouldnt do that. They make a change over that costs 50 bucks. Here is a link to what they look like.

Splined Conversion & Extension Adapter, Male Shaft 1-3/8 in. 6 Spline, Female Shaft 1-1/8 in. 6 Spline, Ext. 4 in. - 0271059 | Tractor Supply Company

There like this but they go from 540 6 spline to 1000 20 spline.

It might be the same as the one on our 4020 John deere. You pop out a clip at the base of the pto shaft on the tractor, slip the pto shaft out and reverse it. Essentially the pto shaft is about a 10" reversible stub shaft. Hopefully you will get it working. I would think there must be some kind of built in system so you cant accidently run 540 equipment with the 1000 setting.

Good luck

Well I tried the pto shaft converter initially and that why I'm asking the questions. The converter started to become loose after about 40 bales, so I shut down the baler. Also the tractor has a lever in the cab for 540-n-1000 rpm, so it seems that you can forget to change speed between operations. According to the Montana guys in AK, the shaft is not reversible and to buy an adapter/ converter. I research the transmission spec and it looks non-swap or reversible. So that is why I was pursuing the baler side pto shaft. Taking a torch to it is not good answer either because there is a double universal joint on the shaft on the tractor side , the joints are bigger and beefy than the normal shaft joint and the shaft has to be perfectly balanced to work right. This shaft is about ~6 ft long $1500 at NH dealer and about $1000 on eBay.

There is one more thing that I need to look at and that is the length of the shaft. Needed to validate that shaft is not to long on a sharp turn with the converter in place. ~ 6 to 8" more than normal. That might explain why the converter started to loosen up after a while during operation and a few sharp down hill turns. Will let you know.

By the way, Tractor Supply doesn't carry that particular converter. You probably need to order it special from them. I got the initial converter from NH dealer for about $21.

The baler parts catalog shows different CV universal joints and different rear half shaft tube part numbers. That eliminates the possibility of swapping out the tractor end yoke or front CV half shaft to get the proper tractor end yoke connection. To eliminate the possibility of self-inflicted driveline problems, drop the idea of using adapters and extenders and get the correct PTO shaft to run the baler at the proper speed. You will need to verify that the splines on the gearbox input shaft are the same for both the 540 RPM and 1000RPM gearboxes. There is no cheap way to do this correctly.

Thanks RickB... You are on the same page.. That seems to be the only good answer. I've been trying to determine that exact point- are the shafts on the 540 and 1000 gearboxes the same, so I can get a full 540 shaft and replace the 1000 one. That way I can sell the baler at a later time and not be a bastardized unit.
