Tach BX readings - installing Tiny-Tach?

For someone that has a tach on their BX - what is the engine speed range, idle and WOT?

Also - I was not able to find a post on installing a Tiny Tach. What is the sending unit/system to supply the tach with speed input? Is there some kind of sensor that installs on the drive shaft, or what??

The Tiny Tach operates on a sensor that is clamped to the fuel injector line that senses pulses of fuel to determine speed. It is a good unit, however I don't believe that it is a "must have" type of accessory for the BX. After a few hours on the machine, you will develop a feel for the RPM and how to operate the machine at optimum performance levels. If you consider its cost of about $75, it isn't a big investment, but you can also put that same $75 toward a tool such as a tooth bar that you will get more use out of. It is one of those personal choices in life that you will make, just like a radio with a CD player or not. If you decide that you want a Tiny Tach, the size to order is the 6mm sensor..... The lowest rpm that registers on mine is 1260. Blowing snow this winter, I ran at 2950-3100 rpm. I rarely run at WOT, so can't attest as to how high the Tiny Tach will register on a BX.

Installation was easy- the most trying part was determining that I had, in fact, managed to strip the paint off the spot on the fuel line that I was mounting the transducer to!!!

Electron8... I have a Tiny Tach and I use it a lot. I like to run my implements at the rated PTO speed and the only way to accurately know the RPMs is to consult a tach. I know that many people go by engine sound or throttle position but if you wear hearing protectors engine/implement sound doesn't work. Throttle position/PTO RPMs doesn't work well because throttle position changes as the load on the implement changes. I have noticed that throttle position varies considerably when I mow with my grass catcher attached. When the grass is thick and tall I need a lot more throttle to maintain RPMs.

I agree that the tach is not a necessity but I think it is a useful add-on.

When I mow with my BX2200, with or without the catcher, I always mow at full throttle. I believe the manual tells you to do so.

I agree with you. I think the $75 could be better spent on other essential items. A small tractor like the BX2200's can be played by ear when it comes to the rpm of the equipment. Run your MMM wide open and use common sense on your other pto driven attachments.
