I have a MF 1140. The more I read on this site the more I learn. I am just realizing that my tractor is very similar to the Iseki tractors.
The tach on my tractor usually stops working a short time after being started. Can any one give some pointers as to how to correct this problem? I have a little mechanical and electrical experience in general but not alot of tractor repair experience so it is ok to start with basic steps( I would appreciate this).

Thanks in advance
Chris

Check the tach cable connections at both ends. They should be screwed in tight. My Iseki TA210 had a loose cable at the tach side, that caused the tach to work off and on.

I have a couple of TA series Isekis( the same as the 11XX Massey) with tach problems. The most common cause is a stripped gear in the tach. When they sit for a long time they stick and when started the plastic gear strips out on the tach shft. It is a pressed on gear. I usually use a good epoxy to put it back. I have done a couple that are still working. If that is it be sure and lube everything good with a "light" oil. Grease gets stiff in the winter and can cause the same thing.

Thanks for the input guys. I checked the cable at both ends and it was snug at both. I went ahead and loosened the cable at the meter end. I then started the tractor and made sure the inner shaft was turning(it was). Next I inserted the cable into the meter and the tach worked for a few minutes but then stopped. I tried reinserting the cable and tightning several times but the tach never worked for more than a few minutes. I will try to check the gear soon. Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Chris

Pinch the turning cable with your fingers and see if the cable still turns with some resistance applied to it. If it does, then like Reed says, its in the tach gearing itself. If not then the cable is probably broken.

Thanks for the suggestion Jim, I'll check that this weekend when I can do a little more work
