Tach not working on International 724

I'm looking at purchasing an international 724. As with many old tractors the tach is not working. What is typically involved in repairing a broken tach? Is it the tach itself that needs to be replaced or something in the connections or possibly both?

Often it can be something as simple as a broken drive cable. I've had tach's repaired at speedometer shops.
