I would like to add tail/gauge wheels to the back of my box blade. This would be used to get a perfect grade on my drive. I can do it with the read blade or BB the way it is but this would be a lot easier. Set it and forget it /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif.

I'll have to fabing on the BB to make a bracket but where can I find tail wheel assemblies relatively cheap? Perhaps they are called Trailing wheel assemblies. Something similar to whats on the back of a rotary mower.

I was hoping to do the same thing with a landscape rake. I have a Harbor Freight store near me and saw that a variety of wheels are cheap there. I was thinking maybe I would get some there and jury rig something up, like you described.

Home depot also sells mower deck gauge or roller style wheels to prevent scalping.. also fairly cheap.

Soundguy:

What are the HD wheels made of. If they are like finish mower deck gauge wheels, they would be plastic. How well do you think they would hold up working on rough ground under the load of a 54" loaded box blade?

Joe, do you have a tractor supply nearby? They sell replacement tires and wheels for rotary cutters. They're that solid tire made from strips. ...probably a little big, but you'll never wear them out. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif You would have to fabricate some type of adjustable yoke too. It might be a big project.

If you have a good well stocked hardware store nearby, they will probably have a selection of wheels of different types from pneumatic to solid rubber to steel. I would think a 3" to 4"solid rubber or steel would work best. The rotary cutter type wheel would probably be too large.

I'm sure they are some sort of plastic or vinyl material.. cheap though. I was out at TSC yesterday.. and though a bit more pricey.. they had metal casters. Also.. small 8" or 10" pneumatic tires.. for ? 4.99?

Was out yesterday, had to dig up my pipe from the septic tank to the drain field and replace it....fun.

I stopped by TSC and they almost have what I'm looking for. Instead of having a spindle their assemblies have a plate with four bolt holes. These would work, just need to weld on a rod so I can have a height adjustment.

If I can't find a couple used tail wheel assemblies I'll probably go with the TSC units.

Thanks
Chris

I've been looking for the same wheels, TSC was $49.99ea for the caster wheels.
Northern has them a lot cheaper, just need to order them.

a surplus place nearby has a 4 wheel conversion kit for some older 3 wheel mowers, around $110 for the 2" tube axle and 2 wheels.
